Regis University Las Vegas

- Fall 2007

News From The Campus Director

Career Services Visit September 19

Cyndy Redifer, Senior Career Counselor, from the Denver campus Career Services office will be in Las Vegas and available for career services on Wednesday, September 19 in the first of regularly scheduled monthly visits slated for the third Thursday of each month.

Please contact Cyndy directly by phone at 1-800-388-2366, x. 3528 or by email at credifer@regis.edu to discuss your needs and set up and appointment.

For guidance on what Career Services can do for you see www.regis.edu/careerservices.

Virtual Bookstore to serve the Las Vegas Campuses

We will provide more details as the changeover time draws nearer, but I wanted to let you know that effective Spring semester, which starts in January 2008, our local bookstore needs will be met by using an online book ordering procedure. We will not have an inventory of books that you can buy directly from the Las Vegas campus.

Normal shipping costs for online orders will be paid by the bookstore and when you register for classes you will be told which books are required for the course and prompted to order at that time. Obviously you can wait and order at your discretion however the longer you wait the more the risk you will not have your books when classes begin.

You may have experienced delays in getting books this semester and for that we apologize. The virtual bookstore will allow you to take charge of your bookstore needs and receive books through the mail at no increase in cost over books bought from us.

First Night Assignments

First night assignments are a mandatory part of the College for Professional Studies at Regis University. If the class overview for your class includes a first night assignment, it is important that you complete the assignment because your instructor will collect and grade it. The inclusion of a first night assignment helps Regis maintain its academic standards while offering classes in an accelerated format. First night assignments that are not turned in on time will be subject to the same "late work policy" your instructor applies to the other assignments in your class.

To access your first night assignment:
- Go to Webadvisor.regis.edu
- Click on Students
- Click on Looking for SPS Course Modules/first night assignments?
- Click on your program (SPS Undergraduate, SPS Graduate, Teacher Education)
- Click on course subject (Accounting, Marketing, Psychology, etc)
- Locate course name (PY 433, MT 201, etc) and click on Overview
- Enter Username and Password and locate first night assignment

The Big Move!
    - Our New Summerlin Campus
      is Now Open for Classes

Starting on September 11th, 2007, classes in Summerlin will be held at our new campus, located at:

1201 North Town Center Drive Suite 150 Las Vegas, NV 89144

The cross streets are Covington Cross and Town Center. Maps to this location are available at the front desk in Henderson.

It's A New Term!
    - Have You Seen Your Advisor Yet?

Reach your goals according to plan by scheduling an advising appointment at least once a Semester. Your advisor will go over your Degree Plan with you and assist you in choosing classes for the upcoming terms.

The Importance of Your Degree Plan

Your degree plan is one of the most important tools you will receive as a student. The degree plan not only provides information regarding University policies, but also it provides you with information about what courses and credits you need to complete your degree.

If you no longer have your degree plan, or if you need some assistance updating it, please contact your advisor - they will be happy to provide you with a copy.

Calling All Parents!

Regis University maintains a No Unsupervised Children on Campus policy. Children are not permitted in classrooms, nor can they be left of campus without adult supervision - for example, sitting outside the classroom, in the break room, or in the reception area. Thank you for your cooperation.

Need Books?
    - New Library Agreements

Regis Library has maintained an agreement with UNLV the past several years, which allowed Regis students to use Lied Library and to have 10 books checked out from UNLV at any one time. Given the low number of Regis students who took advantage of this arrangement we have decided to terminate our contract with UNLV the end of August 2007.

The agreement we have with the Paseo Verde Public Library in Henderson will remain in effect. In addition, we have initiated an agreement with the College of Southern Nevada (formerly the Community College of Southern Nevada) so that Regis students will have the same library rights and privileges there that they previously had at UNLV. The Charleston campus of CSN, located at 6375 W Charleston Blvd, is a few miles from the Regis Summerlin campus. The Henderson campus of CSN is located at 700 College Drive. In order to check out materials from the CSN libraries, make sure to identify yourself as a Regis student.

As a Regis student registered with CSN libraries, you will no longer be able to check books out directly from UNLV. However, if there are UNLV books you need, CSN will be able to get them for you quickly through interlibrary loan. If you would prefer instead to maintain your direct borrowing privileges at UNLV, you can set up an account there as a community borrower using your valid state ID and a major credit card.

If you have questions, please contact:

Distance Services Librarian

Our upcoming orientation is scheduled on Thursday, October 18th, 2007 at 5pm.

Registering for classes THE EASY WAY!

Do you have trouble using WebAdvisor to register for classes? Are all of those fields confusing you? Let this step-by-step guide light your way!

1. Go to www.regislasvegas.org Click on "Student Resources" & open a copy of the latest schedule. You will use this to find the course information required for registration.

2. In a new browser window (File-New-Window in Internet Explorer) and go to webadvisor.regis.edu (there is no "www" before the address).

3. Click on "Students" then "Register for Sections" then "Express Registration" then enter your login information and click "Submit"

4. On the express registration screen:

  • Ignore the field that says "Synonym"
  • Use the pull-down menu in the "Subject" field to locate the letters in your course prefix (EX: EDU or BA or MBAF). You can find your course prefix on the schedule you opened in step 1.
  • In the "Course Number" field, key in the course number for your course (EX: 412F or 690 or 201).
  • In the "Section Number" field, key in the section number found next to your course on the schedule (EX: L10 or L70).
  • Use the pull-down menu in the "Term" field to locate the term for your course.
  • You can locate your courses term (EX: 07S5W1 or 07S8W2 or 07SSMG) on the schedule you opened in step 1.

5. Once you enter the information for all of the classes you want to take click "Submit"

6. On the "Register and Drop" screen, you'll see the courses you entered on the previous screen listed at the top, and the courses you're currently registered for listed on the bottom. Next to the courses you want to register for, use the pull-down menu in the "Action" field to select "RG-Register." If you see a class on the list that you really don't want to register for, select "RM" in the "Action" field.

7. Click "Submit" and you're done! You can go back to the "Students Menu" and click "My Class Schedule" if you want to see a list of your courses.

APA Style Writing Assistance

Yes, Regis is raising the bar for writing skills.

If you don't already have an APA Style Manual, Regis has them for purchase, or you can get an overview of the writing style Regis requires by going to the APA site online. Faculty have been provided with writing referral forms for those students whose writing skills need improving. In the lab, Affiliate Faculty Sherrie Bodenstab provides writing, editing, and proofreading assistance, free of charge, from 4:00-6:30 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays in Room 115 at the Henderson Campus, and C.J. Hannon is available at the Summerlin Campus on. You may also make an appointment with Sherrie at 837-6738 or at via E-mail at Bodenstab_s@earthlink.net.

In addition to our free writing labs at both campuses, if you are interested in further tutoring you can refer to the below website for instructions about tutoring access.

Regis Email Usage

In the Fall 2007 semester, all official communications from the University WILL ONLY GO TO Regis.Edu email accounts. All students will need to have a RegisNet account and email address. There are instructions on the Regis website on how to have the Regis.edu email address forwarded to another email address.

The University is implementing this policy in order to ensure that we are in compliance with federal privacy statutes and regulations. The regis.edu account is behind our firewall and when information is sent to people we can be assured that when it leaves here it is addressed to only the person it is intended to go to. If the faculty or student has it then forwarded to a different address, the University has still met its obligation under federal law.

Faculty who communicate with students about assignments, grades and other academic issues must use the official University email address of the student; otherwise the faculty member could be in violation of federal law and University policy. If someone were to file a complaint under federal privacy laws, that faculty member could be personally liable. The same goes for information and communications staff send to faculty and students.

We are encouraging all students to establish a RegisNet account and to start using the Regis.edu email address immediately in order to receive important information from the University and faculty.

Please let us know if you need assistance in establishing or resurrecting your Regis University email account.

Need Money? You're In Luck!

Here are some answers to frequently asked questions about financial aid.

How do I apply for financial aid?

To apply for financial aid, you must complete the on-line Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) each year at: www.fafsa.ed.gov.

What is Regis' School Code?

Regis Financial Aid School Code: 001363

Do I have to reapply for financial aid?

Yes, you need to complete and submit the new FAFSA every year by March 1st. You may lose all or most of your financial aid if you do not reapply by this deadline date.

How do I know how much I owe?

The exact amount that you owe is available to you on-line through WebAdvisor.

When will I get an award letter?

Approximately two weeks after your financial aid file is complete, you will receive notification of financial aid that describes the types and amounts of financial aid that are awarded to you.

How can I get a scholarship?

Scholarship opportunities are posted on the Regis University web site. Go to Scholarships on the Financial Aid web site to learn more about scholarships and how to apply.

What is subsidized and unsubsidized?

When a Federal Stafford Loan is subsidized, it means that the federal government will pay the interest that is accruing on the loan while you are enrolled at least half-time in college and during your six-month grace period. If the loan is unsubsidized, then this interest is accumulating during this same time frame and you may elect to pay the interest or defer paying it until your loan enters repayment. You must document financial need in order to qualify for the subsidized federal student loan.

When will my aid be disbursed?

The aid disbursement process starts when you have submitted all of the required documents and you have begun attending classes for at least the minimum number of credits that are listed on your award letter. Allow up to 14 days for the financial aid credit(s) to be posted to your student account and any excess amount to be mailed to you in the form of a check. Here is an example: You are an undergraduate receiving Federal Stafford Loans for fall semester. You are taking 3 credit hours during 5-week-1; 3 credit hours during 5-week-2, and 3 credit hours during 5-week-3. Your fall Federal Stafford Loan funds will be disbursed after the 5-week-2 add/drop period.

More questions? Get additional help with your Financial Aid questions online at www.Regis.Edu/financialaid or by calling 1-800-388-2366 Ext. 4066.

Technology Tips

"90% of computer problems occur between the keyboard and the chair."

If you've ever wanted a good home office suite but don't want to spend the money for MS Office, then OpenOffice may be just the thing for you. OpenOffice is a software suite that is completely compatible with and comparable to MS Office but costs absolutely nothing. It's a product of the GPL (general public license) series of software solutions being funded by a number of congressional acts passed in the Clinton era. The bottom line is, GPL software is produced and maintained for free public use and distribution by various developers, and these developers receive grants and preferential treatment in return. So, if you're one of the many students who are struggling along with a very old office suite, or spending hours in the computer lab because you have no way of doing your homework at home, I would suggest you surf on over to www.openoffice.org and download their latest offering. I think you'll be very pleased with the results.
